Regenerative fuel cell development for satellite secondary power. Final technical report, Apr 1972-Apr 1973. [H/sub 2//O/sub 2/ fuel cells]

Abstract : The objective of this contract was to further develop solid polymer electrolyte (SPE) regenerative fuel cells for communications satellite applications. 'Boilerplate' spherical units with 6-inch diameter cell active areas containing lightweight current collectors and wicks suitable for satellite missions were designed and tested. Full-size regenerative H2/O2 fuel cells with an active area of 0.2 sq ft demonstrated good mechanical integrity in charge/discharge testing to 124 cycles. All tests were terminated because of low performance, with no incidents of failure, burning or cross-membrane leakage in five electrochemical tests when test conditions were 'on design'. These results were achieved on lightweight cells, current collectors and wicks similar to those envisioned for satellite application. Mechanical integrity was achieved at pressures up to 300 psi and at pressure differentials of 30 psi with no leakage. (Modified author abstract)
