Characterization of the handover dwell time in mobile cellular networks

There has been extensive activity in the study of method that can be used to optimize handover procedures of future cellular networks. In the frame of handover request queueing, while the channel holding time distribution and the cell boundary crossing rate have been analytically formulated, the distribution of the allowed queue waiting time, i.e. the handover dwell time, has been up to the present only reasonably assumed, hence representing an open question from the analytical standpoint. Therefore, the paper proposes an analytical modeling of the handover dwell time. The geometry, mobility and shadow fading parameters have been included. A very satisfactory agreement has been obtained between the modeling and simulation results.
