Multi-objective Optimal Placement of FACTS Devices Based on Smart Pareto Solution

Aiming at improving static voltage stability, transfer capability and transient stability of power grid, mathematical model of optimal flexible AC transmission system (FACTS) devices placement was designed. Calculation method was given to get single objective optimal solutions considering investment cost based on the analysis of functional characteristics of several typical FACTS devices such as static var compensator (SVC), static synchronous compensator (STATCOM) and thyristor controlled series compensator (TCSC). A method was proposed to obtain a minimal representation of Pareto frontier of multi-objective function using smart Pareto filter. It can reflect the compromise of each scheme and help to make an optimal choice. Simulations were performed on New England 39-bus system, results testify the validity and economy of the proposed method.
