Abstract : This document contains the results of an investigation of the use of redundancy techniques to improve the quality of digital data transmission over a landline and microwave channel without using feedback. An extensive literature search for pertinent data was conducted and the findings used to estimate probable error characteristics. Polynomial coding, convolutional coding, and message repetition systems were selected and compared in the hypothesized channel by means of computer simulations and evaluated in terms of implementation complexity and cost effectiveness. Message repetition was found to be distinctly inferior to the other two techniques. Polynomial coding was selected as the most appropriate technique for this application. (Author)
