Transmission limitation of all-optical network based on N/spl times/N multi/demultiplexer

A study on the transmission limitations of an all-optical network using an N/spl times/N multi/demultiplexer or wavelength router is presented. Modelling results show that such a network can support up to 400 wavelength channels transparently over a distance of /spl sim/1000 km. The implication of these results is that a centralised wavelength routing node could provide interconnection on a national scale.
