A historical perspective on Dewar's landmark contribution to organometallic chemistry

Abstract A historical background to Dewar's development of a bonding model for metal–alkene complexes in 1951 is reviewed and its implications described. Chatt and Duncanson's subsequent contribution is also reviewed.
