Optimization method of signal phase design for typical four-way intersections

The determination of phase plan is the first step of traffic signal design. Based on the diversity and uncertainty of traffic flow at intersections, a new signal phase optimization design method for typical four-way intersections was proposed in this paper. The signal phase plan of a typical four-way intersection is determined by the left-turn control, the left-turn phase, and the equilibrium of traffic flow. In this paper, the proposed method of the signal phase optimization design is simple, highly flexible and applicable, and suitable for programming into computer software. Since the algorithm of the proposed method can be easily formulated, the efficiency of signal phase plan design for typical four-way intersections can be highly improved.
