An Evaluation of Driver Simulators for Safety Training

Abstract : The effectiveness of simulators in improving driver safety was evaluated in a 20-hour Driver Safety Education Course administered to 193 experienced drivers in Fort Lewis, Washington. Approximately half of the drivers received a program utilizing a motion picture type trainer and half used conventional media. Conclusions were (a) Programmed motion picture simulators are slightly superior to conventional methods in developing those knowledges and habits emphasized in their programs; (b) differences favoring the simulator are not likely to have sufficient impact to warrant a full-scale research program to determine their effectiveness in the long-term reduction of accidents and violations; and (c) simulators represent a promising approach to the development of safe driving knowledges, skills, and habits.
