Group decoding for the uplink small packet multiple access

Massive transmission of small data packets cause heavy signaling overhead to the current communication system, the small packet multiple access (SPMA) proposed by Xie and Yin is an attractive scheme to address this problem. Unfortunately, the scheme faces the challenge of large processing latency and high computation cost introduced by a great number of iterations. In this paper, we apply the group decoding method to small packet recovery. This method is highly depended on the stage of user detection, and the detected group size at each iteration is theoretically studied. A proper group detection strategy is finally given by considering both the iteration number and demodulation accuracy. Simulation results show that the group decoding method can greatly reduce the iteration number and the decoding time, it can also produce a better demodulation accuracy in certain conditions.
