The Interwar Health Insurance Scheme: A Rejoinder

Whiteside has written a provocative and stimulating paper. I offer this rejoinder in no carping spirit. But since Britain may yet have to consider the creation of another health insurance system, it is important that its experience with the last one be recorded correctly. Whiteside has not done that, for she has failed to understand the extent to which the approved societies (and the doctors) influenced the making of policy.
