How should maternal death due to suicide be classified? Discrepancy between ICD‐10 and ICD‐MM

The maternal mortality rate in Japan is estimated to be around four in 100,000 births1 , similar to that of other developed countries. In 2010, the Japan Association of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (JAOG) established a registration system and the Maternal Death Exploratory Committee (JMDEC) to further reduce the number of maternal deaths. Among all maternal deaths in Japan, the causes of obstetric hemorrhage categorized as direct causes have subsequently progressively decreased, from 29% in 2010 to 7% in 2017.
