A unified architecture for design and manufacturing integration

ABSTRACT This chapter discusses the functional requirements and constraints for an effective production environment, ranging from design to manufacturing. Generic approaches to modularity are presented, followed by a two-dimensional architecture to support computer-integrated manufacturing. This architecture serves as a skeleton on which to base conventional information structures as well as artificial intelligence techniques. The utility of this approach is demonstrated by a number of examples that show how the structure can accommodate specific facets of design and production.
