This article describes the joint effort by the Kansas Highway Patrol and the Kansas Department of Traffic to develop a good traffic management system to deal with tens of thousands of fans who converge to watch racing events at the new Kansas Speedway. The two agencies hoped to avoid the history of traffic management nightmares that plague other raceways. The article describes the portable traffic management system-ADDCO's Smart Zone-the agencies acquired to provide real-time information on traffic conditions, as well as the locations they chose to place the equipment. The author describes how the system worked at the first three race events held in 2001.
