Performance results and analysis of self-regulated PV system in Algerian Sahara

Abstract Analysis of past experience is vital for the implementation of new large scale rural electrification programs. This article compiles part of the experience gained with a wide use of self-regulated PV systems in the frame of the 20 solar villages program located at the Algerian Sahara. A typical stand-alone photovoltaic system (SAPV) of 7.0 kW p is selected as a case study. Its performance analysis through component efficiencies, energy balance, figures of merit has lead to the extraction of several lessons with regard to the use of this regulation technique in such climatic conditions. It is concluded that special attention should be given to the effect of ambient temperature on the performance of all devices composing the PV system.
