About three cases of acute theophylline intoxication: clinical, toxicological and pharmacokinetic studies.

SummaryThis paper reports three cases of acute theophylline intoxication. Two are caused by voluntary ingestion of two and four grams of the equivalent of theophylline respectively. The third one is an accidental overdose through rectal and parenteral administration of the drug (2.5 g rectally and 0.4 g intravenously). The authors point out the correlation existing between the clinical manifestations and the theophylline plasma levels. They insist on the dehydration and the hypokalemia. The quantitative determinations of the drug in the plasma, saliva and gastric fluid have allowed a pharmacokinetic interpretation. A therapeutic approach is discussed.
