Applying Environmental Management System (EMS) to Administrate Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) Industry: A Case Study of Shanghai, China

The improper management of Municipal solid waste (MSW) is detrimentalto healthy development for modern Cities. In order to improve the efficiency and effectivenessof MSW management, a novel management approach is proposed to minimizethose negative effects. The approach is developed based on life cycle assessment (LCA)of MSW, and could provide better performance if combined with the Plan-Do-Check-Act(PDCA) procedure. The proposed approach is further examined by using a real worldcase study in Shanghai, one of the largest cities in China. The simulation results showedthat the environment could be changed significantly by the use of the proposed approach. The indicators, such as, CGW (tonne CO2-eq./year), CDO (CFC-11-eq./year),CA (tonne SO2-eq./year), CHT (tonne 1, 4-DCB-eq./tonne), CPMF (tonne PM10 -eq./tonne), CNESE (tonne 1,4-DCB eq./tonne), NESEP (tonne oil eq./tonne) were reducedfrom 610509, 322, 36652, 864, 615 and 155 to the present 203503, 203, 26701, 534,475 and 105, respectively. Therefore, we call for a more efficient management of MSWto improve municipal environment.
