The evolution of colorectal carcinoma.

Pathologists and radiologists have much in common over the whole range of hospital practice but, in particular, we share a deep interest in the morphological aspects of oncolog). In this lecture I shall be describing the histopathology of the polyp-cancer or adenoma-carcinoma sequence in the large bowel which is now widely accepted as the morphological basis for the evolution of colorectal cancer. This concept has profound importance for research into those genetic and environmental factors believed to be important in the causation of cancer of the large bowel (Morson et al., 1983). It influences the surgical treatment of patients, but here I will be concentrating on the morphological sequence of events, the time it takes for these to evolve and the clinical application of these studies.
