Fracture-induced photon emission of aluminium oxide and its application to fracture mechanical investigations

Mechanically-stimulated luminescence is generated during sub-critical crack growth prior to macroscopic bending fracture of sintered alumina, fusion-cast Al2O3, sapphire, and ruby. At similar toughness, KIc, the measured intensity increases with the hardness of the tested specimens, it does not depend on the macroscopic fracture strength.
