PREDETERMINATION OF CURRENT AND TORQUE REQUIREMENTS OF ISOLATED POWER SYSTEMS

The paper outlines the modifications to individual electrical machine and mechanical plant models that are necessary and adequate for the accurate assessment of performance for compact and isolated power systems. The paper describes the formulation of an overall system model suitable for obtaining the transient response of such systems and in particular focusses attention on power systems associated with both the offshore oil recovery program and a typical dynamically positioned vessel. Both cases represent examples of isolated electrical power systems possessing limited generation capacity and which are required to provide electrical power for large compressors, pumps, and with respect to the latter, variable pitch induction motor driven propeller drives. The paper is illustrated by typical results obtained from simulation studies for both types of systems.
