Significance of asymptomatic microhaematuria in men

Asymptomatic microhaematuria is not an uncommon ® nding during the routine investigation of men attending genitourinary medicine (GUM) clinics. In a recent study in which microscopy and culture of urine samples of all GUM clinic attenders was undertaken, 3% were found to have microhaematuria1. As might be expected the incidence has been shown to be higher amongst those attending a urology outpatient clinic (4.2%)2. However, one investigator has reported that 21.7% of those referred for urological investigation for this were referred from GUM clinics3.
