Use of Uniform Terminology by Occupational Therapists

Uniform Terminology for Occupational TherapySecond Edition (American Occupational TherapJ' Association, 1989b) was published to foster consistency in terminolog)' among occupational therapists. In this stud)'. agreement between occupational therapists and Uniform Terminology (;lbout the dejlnition and categorization of 15 terms was examined. A[!,reement was measured on 113 responses/iml1 a randomlv selected s(;lmple of 180 occupational therapists. Low leue!s oj agreement were found on both definition of terms (71.9 mean percentage of agreement. ,~D = 124) and categorization oj terms into hilger conceptual c(;ltegories (349 mean percentage of agreement, SD = 11.7). Thempists selected an altenwtil'e definition more often than the one giuen by Uniform Terminologv on 2 oj 15 terms and selected an alternatioe categorizCltion more open tlHtrl the one gil'en in Uniform Terminology on /5 oj 15 terms. These results indicote that therapists do not agree tuit/) many Umform Terminologv de/initions Clnd categorizations.
