SUSY: Capabilities and range of application

The paper is divided into three sections: 'What is SUSY', 'How does SUSY work', and 'What can SUSY do*. After giving the background of the Saarbrücken MT-system SUSY, the author describes its overall construction and its characteristics, e.g. multifinguality, extendibility, flexibility, modularity, and special features like data structure, interface structure, lexicon system, etc. Copious attention is then devoted to the capabilities and range of application of the system, especially to experiences with different text types and dictionary encoding. A tentative overall assessment of the system is given from the system designer's point of view. It is pointed out that SUSY has not yet achieved the status of a fully operational system, but is approaching this goal. The range of application does not only cover machine translation: the automatic language analysis part of SUSY has successfully been integrated into an information retrieval system (Prof. Zimmermann's CTX).
