Directions in man's adventure: Inward or outward his drives for understanding are likely to lead forward

T he largest exposition of the western chemical world, ACHEMA, has finished another of its triennial sessions in Frankfurt, Germany. It was impressive not only as a great exhibition, sponsored by the Deutsche Gesellschaft fur chemisches Apparatewesen, but also as a gathering of chemists and chemical engineers from over the world. The opening ceremonies of ACHEMA presented two technical lectures. One dealt with the Saturn-Apollo project and was by Dr. Eberhard Rees, of Huntsville, Ala. The other was on the factor of personality in the research organization, by Prof. Paul Matussek, psychiatrist, of Munich, Germany. The first reaction to these two topics was to their striking contrast. Yet both look, in different ways, to the future. For man's pattern of drive is toward ever greater understanding and control of his environment, and both subjects fit into that pattern.
