Measurement and ray-tracing of wideband indoor channel in UHF TV white space

The UHF TV band is now being opened by regulators to new wireless services and markets on light-licensing or license-exempt basis, which is very attractive to low-power indoor applications. In this paper, we present our study on wireless indoor channel in UHF band using a novel measurement scheme. Comparing with reported channel measurement using vector network analyzer (VNA), there is no need of RF cable connection between transmitter and receiver sides in this scheme, hence the location range of measurement is extended significantly. We measured received signal power, channel impulse response and power delay profile in the scenario of our institute's floor, which characterizes a typical indoor office environment. The measured received signal power agree well with the predicted results generated by a ray-tracing software Wireless InSite. A further case study for reducing indoor-to-outdoor interference leakages of a femto cell is performed using this software. The work in this paper paves the way for further investigation on indoor applications in UHF TV band, such as cognitive wideband digital link and cognitive PMSE system in TV white space.
