On the differentiation of anthrax bacilli from Bacillus cereus.

led Smith, Gordon and Clark (1952) to suggest that nonvirulent strains of B. anthracis may actually be identical with B. cereus, and further that it may be proper to regard virulent anthrax bacilli as pathogenic variants of the supposedly more stable parent species, B. cereus. Recently Brown et al (1955, 1956, 1958) have presented new evidence in support of these concepts. Brown, Moody, Treece and Smith (1958) described an anthrax-like disease produced in laboratory animals as the result of inoculating rapidly multiplying B. cereus which had apparently been transformed into capsulated bacilli capable of causing "the gross pathology of anthrax."
