ABSTRACT A survey of energy resources, supplies and consumption was conducted in three villages in the Sudan-Savanna region of Nigeria. Results of this survey indicate that people in these villages rely mainly on fuel wood, crop residues and animal wastes for their cooking and heating requirements. Supply of fossil fuels in these villages is highly irregular. There is no electricity supply to any of these villages. Human and animal power are greatly used for water collection, agriculture, transport and local crafts. A number of renewable energy systems on a family and community basis can make considerable improvements in the life-style of these dwellers.
