DC-Electroluminescent Flat Panel Display.

Abstract : The report describes research on cells made of electroluminescent powder in an organic plastic matrix, where a brightness of 22 fL at 100 V is reached. Improvements in brightness and stability have been realized by a double coating of the ZnS:Mn powder with copper sulfide. Evaporated films of ZnS:Mn:Cu containing small amounts of aluminum have shown green electroluminescence, which might lead to higher brightness due to the favorable shift in the spectra. A cell made with a 1-micrometer-thick laser evaporated film of ZnS:2%Mn:03%Cu has shown a brightness of 25 fL at 65 V, which is the highest brightness that the authors have observed at this voltage to date. Co-sputtered films of (ZnS)(1-x)(SiO2)(x):Mn:Cu containing about 11 volume % silica have shown electroluminescence. This material is an inorganic film analogue of the powder-organic matrix cell.
