In traditional language teaching methods, learning grammar rules and word pairs (second and native language combinations) was considered very important. Furthermore, the emphasis was on the use of written language. In more recent views, the use of spoken, productive language is considered to be more important, and the learning of words in the second language through deduction from contexts is advocated.
