Fin Effectiveness Optimization of Elliptical Annular Fins by Genetic Algorithm

Abstract In this study, the Elliptical Annular Fin (EAF) is considered to have optimization. The optimization method uses the Genetic Algorithm (GA) to search, combine and optimize the structure size of the EAF. The fin effectiveness is taken as objective function; constant volume and unit thickness are the constraints in the GA. The surface area of the fin, radius of the Circular Tube (CT) and Shaped Tube Efficiency (STE) are the parameters for the optimization objectives under free convection. The Performances of the EAF are evaluated based on the parameters that the GA has generated and the corresponding fin effectiveness is calculated. This optimization result has proved that EAF is more effective than circular fin with same area of cross section of EAF and the Shape Factor (SF) values are less than0.5 for different value of efficiency. It is observed that the fin effectiveness is maximum when the minor axis touches the circumference of the CT and the SF value is very low. This optimization method is universal and may be used for optimization of EAF under specified volume.
