Development and Growth

This chapter summarizes knowledge on factors influencing development and growth of Atlantic salmon and brown trout, among which, temperature is the abiotic variable with the most extensive effect. Temperature is a characteristic of the habitat and one of the axes of Hutchinson’s (1957) multidimensional niche (Box 3.2). It affects the muscle contractility and other physiological reactions of fish, and thereby, swimming, feeding, metabolic rate, growth and reproduction. Salmonids occur in habitats with water temperatures in the range of approximately 0–30°C. But there are narrower limits for feeding, growth and embryonic development. The thermal performance curves for the two species are similar as also revealed by their similar geographical distributions (see Chap. 2). We begin the chapter by presenting thermal tolerances of salmonids before we describe how temperature influences the various life stages of the species.
