Series AC Arc Fault Detection Using Only Voltage Waveforms

This research generates series AC arc faults and then detects them using voltage waveforms instead of the traditional current waveforms. The detection algorithm analyzes a unique symmetric energy profile generated by the arc fault. The experimental results demonstrate that the harmonics generated by an arc fault’s ignition and extinction can be sensed by voltage measurements at the voltage source where the arc fault circuit interrupters (AFCI) are located.
