Decomposition of the Emissions and Meteorological Components of The Hourly Nox Concentrations in Central London Using Artificial Neural Networks

Atmospheric concentrations of nitrogen oxides (NO X =NO+NO2) are determined by both the magnitude of NO X emissions and the dispersive capabilty of the atmo-sphere. Emissions of NO X are primarily in the form of NO which rapidly reacts with ozone (O3) to produce NO2. Only 2% of NO X emissions are in the form of NO2 (Der-went et al., 1995). In order to accurately model the hourly atmospheric concentrations of such primary pollutants it is important to resolve both the diurnal cycle of emissions and the effects of meteorology.
