TRANSPORTATION OF HAZARDOUS GOODS AND MATERIALS. IN: HANDBOOK OF TRANSPORT AND THE ENVIRONMENT

It is inevitable that some cargos or products have risks associated with their transport, with these usually termed hazardous materials or hazmats. In nearly every country, various regulations have emerged to govern the transport of hazmats in an attempt to avoid impacts on operators and, especially, the general public and environment. This chapter complements an earlier chapter in this volume, dealing with the rationales for public intervention in transportation markets that involve risks, by focusing more specifically on the tools and techniques used in analyzing hazmat transportation risks.
