Activation energy and sub grain size-creep rate relations in sodium chloride

Abstract It is shown that the activation energy for creep, Qc, of single-crystal sodium chloride is equal to the activation energy for lattice self-diffusion of chlorine ions only when the temperature dependence of the elastic modulus of sodium chloride is taken into account. Both values equal 2·1 ± 0·1 e.V. Drop in stress tests suggest that sub grains strongly influence the creep strength of polycrystalline sodium chloride.
