Field and Laboratory Test for Assigning Dielectric Constants of Asphalt Pavement Materials

ABSTRACT This paper investigates the assignment of the dielectric properties of hot-mix asphalt (HMA) pavement materials. The dielectric constants of the HMA pavement materials were considered both in the field and the laboratory. Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) data were collected from 20 asphalt pavement test sites in the field, while dielectric measurements were also performed on the related asphalt cores using appropriate probe equipment in the laboratory. The data analysis comprised a statistical analysis of the considered values as well as analysis of the errors generated by the GPR layer thickness estimation. Based on the related results it is inferred that under a GPR analysis approach the laboratory dielectric values could be used for the development of a correction factor for the dielectric values assigned in the field.
