Mobility recognition system for the visually impaired

This paper presents a prototype of the mobility recognition system for visually impaired people. It is meant to assist them to travel by bus using embedded system and recent technologies to the existing walking cane. The prototype provides obstruction module, detecting obstacles as he moves around, bus stop identifier to alert the bus location with respect to bus stop and bus number identification to determine the bus route. The prototype replaces Braille reading to text-to-speech module giving more independence to the visually impaired person to travel on his own. The embedded system used ultrasound distance sensor, global positioning system (GPS) technology and transceiver in constructing the three modules respectively. The idea behind this project was to construct a system that increases the mobility of the blind people by offering relevant sensing device embedded to walking cane when they navigate their walking path and travelling by bus.
