SAFETY OF CYCLISTS IN URBAN AREAS. DANISH EXPERIENCE

This report consists of four parts. The first part discusses in general the accident situation in Denmark with emphasis on the safety record of cyclists. The second part examines the safety of cyclists at 4-way and T-junctions and demonstrates the modifications of these junctions, such as recessing stop lines in vehicle lanes, can improve the safety of cyclists. The third deals with the safety of cyclists on segments of roadway between major intersections and suggests that one safety improvement, near bus stops, for example, is to make bus zones more visible. The fourth part briefly describes other Danish and foreign studies of cyclist safety.
