Traffic Modelling and Performance Evaluation for a Broadband Satellite Network with On-Board Processor

In this paper, a framework for traffic modelling and planning of a GEO-based broadband satellite network is presented. First, the GEO satellite network architecture is illustrated, the uplink multi-frequency time division multiple access (MF-TDMA) scheme is described, and the corresponding resource allocation algorithm is introduced. Then, a detailed traffic study for the given satellite network is performed. Service descriptions and parameter values for each of the service applications are addressed in both connection level and packet level. Source traffic modelling approaches are provided for different services such as voice, video, and data. Detailed simulations and analysis are done to investigate the impact of traffic mixes on grade of service (GoS), quality of services (QoS), network bandwidth utilization and revenue
