SmartAssist-Wireless Sensor Networks for Unobtrusive Health Monitoring

Emerging demographic changes require new technical solutions to serve the growing elderly population in many countries around the world. Ambient Assisted Living approaches promise to deliver context-aware, personalized services designed to help elderly people live healthier and more autonomous lives. In this direction, we are developing the SmartAssist project, which provides a socio-technical platform based on wireless sensors at home and on the move that detect subtle long-term changes in health status and serve to enhance the user’s social network with context-aware services. In this paper, we discuss the combination of wireless in-house sensors and mobile sensors on smart phones to realize unobtrusive health monitoring.
