SHIP RESISTANCE COMPONENTS REVEALED BY WAKE MOMENTUM AND WAVE PATTERN MEASUREMENTS IN THE PRESENCE OF BREAKING SHIP WAVES

This paper is about measurements of the velocity in the wake in order to determine the rate of change of momentum due to viscosity. A complementary interest is in the measurement of the ship wave pattern to discover the component of resistance due to free surface gravity effects since the sum of the wake velocity traverse and the wave pattern resistance can be expected to equal the total still water resistance measured conventionally by dynamometer. The measurements described in this paper were made at the Ship Division of the National Physical Laboratory. The wake traverse apparatus was designed and built in the Department of Naval Architecture and Shipbuilding in the University of Newcastle upon Tyne.
