Infancy

• The Infant-Family Resource Program in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania identified mothers who had negative perceptions of their babies. Mothers and infants participated in group sessions and also received home visits when needed. At age two, the children showed improved psychosocial and cognitive development compared with similar highrisk children not in the program. • In Maine and Michigan; Denver, Colorado; New Haven, Connecticut; Chapel Hill, North Carolina and many other cities, home visitor infant mental health programs for high-risk families stabilize the functioning of those families and promote their infant's development. • The Family Resource Coalition in Evanston, Illinois serves as a national organization for thousands of family support programs across the country. They include adolescent parenting programs, home visitor programs, drop-in centers, parent support networks and "warmlines" which provide telephone consultation for parents. • Pierre the Pelican, first developed in the 1940s, is a series of monthly letters to new parents providing information on what to expect with their new child and information on good parenting.
