Underwater broadband source detection using an Acoustic Vector Sensor with an adaptive passive matched filter

Abstract This paper considers passive broadband underwater source detection which is more practical but also more challenging than narrowband detection. Typically, broadband source detection employs an energy detector. In this paper, a new detection technique is proposed which uses a Matched Filter (MF) and an Acoustic Vector Sensor (AVS). The AVS outputs three signals, and the corresponding noise can be considered uncorrelated so an MF can be used for passive detection. Adaptive Line Enhancement (ALE) is employed to improve the detection performance. Both numerical simulation and experimental data are used to evaluate the proposed method. The results obtained indicate that it is robust to noise and interference and thus is an effective technique for passive broadband source detection using an AVS.
