Discovery of a Storm Deposit with Small, Glassy Spheres in Hakodate Bay, Hokkaido

函館湾で採取した堆積物コア試料から,小球状ガラス物質(直径0.5～2.0mm)と石炭粒子を含む級化層理の発達した細礫～砂層を見つけた.函館湾周辺には石炭層が露出していないことと,形態的特徴から小球状ガラス物質は熔融した物質が急冷固結したものと推定されることから,我々は小球状ガラス物質と石炭粒子を1945年の函館空襲による大型船舶の被弾・大破炎上時に放出されたものと考えた.そして級化層は,それらが1954年の洞爺丸台風時の暴浪によって再移動と淘汰を受け,類似した水理特性を持つほかの砂粒子とともに再堆積したものと解釈した.このストーム堆積物は,函館湾の堆積物から過去数百年間の気候・環境変動を解読するために重要な年代マーカーとなりうる.
