New solutions are necessary to reduce the high levels of accidents, congestion and pollution caused by today's ever-increasing traffic volumes. Advanced telematic applications can improve traveler support services, allowing people to make better choices for their daily trips. Tangible improvements are expected on indicators such as quality of service, travel times, number of accidents, regularity of public transit, and pollution. Moreover, sophisticated communication facilities should improve the competitive position of public transit systems relative to others. In order to obtain this advantage it is important to keep pace with the development of the capabilities of mobile communication and information processing systems. This paper points out the requirements of the future telecommunications network for transit systems using advanced transportation telematics (ATT) to support safe and advanced services to customers and operators.
