Suitable Placement of UPFC to Improve Transient Stability of Power System

Nowadays Flexible AC Transmission System (FACTS) devices are the major concern in improving power system performance. In this paper, the effect of Unified Power Flow Controller (UPFC) on transient stability of generator in the course of disturbance is analyzed. UPFC is installed independently in different lines of IEEE-14 bus test system and several parameters of swing curve such as peak over/under shoot, settling time (Ts) and damping ratio (δ) are computed to study the transient stability. In addition to the above parameters, deviations in voltage, current and frequency at the generator terminal are also taken into consideration to find the best location for UPFC installation. All these analysis are carried out using Mi-power 9.1 software which is suitable for transient stability studies.
