PROBABILISTIC VERSUS DETERMINISTIC MODELLING FILLING A GAP. PROCEEDINGS OF THE ELEVENTH INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON SOIL MECHANICS AND FOUNDATION ENGINEERING, SAN FRANCISCO, 12-16 AUGUST 1985

The consideration of the spatial location of information concerning soil properties plays an important role in reducing risks associated to heterogeneous soil deposits. The effect of this knowledge is demonstrated through an updating process of modification of the covariance matrix of soil properties which is then applied to investigate the evolution of risk of slope failure. Optimum reconnaissance strategies for this problem are presented and analyzed. For the covering abstract of the conference see IRRD 287689. (Author/TRRL)
