A case for case: exploring the use of case studies in an on-line context

This presentation provides an insight into the learning journey of students and their tutors using the pedagogical approach of case studies in an on-line context. As educators we talk about the priorities of transformative learning and critical reflective practice in work-integrated learning. Yet rarely do we have the examples and tools to achieve these priorities.
We will explore the pedagogical use of case studies and how transformative learning was realised for students and their tutors in a post-graduate teacher education course. The on-line context created an unfamiliar learning environment where past successes in a face to face mode challenged paradigms of successful learners and teachers and created a safe space for all to learn.
Using the metaphor of 'unpacking the case' we explore the constructs which have informed this pedagogical approach; for example, the role of tacit knowledge, narrative in constructing professional knowledge, critical reflective practice and work integrated learning. A brief overview of the practical issues involved in designing cases for learning in an online context is also presented.
