LUTEINIZATION OF THE OVARY OF THE MONKEY BY MEANS OF COMBINED USE OF ANTERIOR PITUITARY EXTRACT AND AN EXTRACT OF PREGNANCY URINE

In previous communications evidence was presented which indicates that the gonad-stimulating, anterior-pituitary-like substance from urine of human pregnancy does not act as a follicle activator in the rhesus monkey (Engle, 1933, 1934). In those instances where massive doses of the pregnancy urine factor were administered intravenously, no increase in oestrin production resulted. The changes were in general regressive in nature, but in many of the larger and medium sized follicles luteoid changes occurred, particularly in the theca interna. Most frequently the granulosa was entirely cytolized in the atretie process set up by the action of the active principle of human pregnancy urine. In cases where this cytolysis did not occur, some of the cells of the granulosa underwent hypertrophy, forming sporadic clumps of typical Intern cells. While a smaller quantity of this substance given intravenously over a longer period would perhaps form typical corpora lutea, from certain practical considerations it was des...
