Brillouin scattering in single crystals of plastic cyclohexane

The technique of high resolution Brillouin spectroscopy has been used to determine the adiabatic elastic constants of oriented single crystals of plastic cyclohexane for temperatures near and at the triple point. The values obtained at 279.2 K were c11 =2.8(57), c12=2.4(72), and c44=0.35(8) (in units of 109 N m−2) with an estimated uncertainty of ±2%. There is evidence for the occurrence of considerable dispersion in the solid, especially near the triple point.
