Pavement Preservation in Canada: Recent Developments

The need to improve pavement design and performance is paramount to ensuring national infrastructure viability. Infrastructure needs in Canada are very similar to those of the United States, given our closely tied economies. Comprehensive pavement performance monitoring through programs such as the Strategic Highway Research Program (SHRP) and Long Term Pavement Performance (LTPP) project in the United States and Canada's complementary C-SHRP and C-LTPP programs have identified design, construction and maintenance improvements for infrastructure quality to improve and life to extend. This has been accomplished through better understanding of pavement design, rehabilitation, and maintenance applications and methods. A Canadian initiative targeted at municipal infrastructure is the focus of this article.
